Project Requirements

Describe problem or opportunity:

ITS has created a new active directory forest,  AD.UNC.EDU, and is giving interested departments the opportunity to migrate their existing environments into this new infrastructure.

Define impact or effects of opportunity:

-AD.UNC.EDU is a new forest built from the ground up.

-Synchronized password (ONYEN/Domain). Therefore, no need to reset passwords.

-No need to create domain accounts. Domain accounts will be created automatically when students /staff/faculty get ONYENs.

-New version of SMS (SCCM 2007) will allow silent install of software for domain computer objects and will have new tools that can be used for remote administration.

-Ability to add Macs to active directory environment.

-Built in policy and structure for computer naming.

-No need for user account provisioning.

-No GINA client needed in labs.

-Increase Domain/Forest security

-New services offered by ITS (Sharepoint, Exchange, Citrix)

-Increase administration efficiency.

Identify who or what is affected by the problem:

All employees of OASIS and all domain users in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Describe the impact of ignoring the opportunity:

To continue with an AD environment that is unstructured, unsecure, and inefficient.

Describe the desired outcome:

Externally, simplified identity management for users.

Internally, collaborate with ITS and be involved with a larger campus IT initiative.

Define the value or benefit with achieving the desired outcome:

By migrating to the new AD forest, OASIS staff will become more efficient, more exposed to newer technologies, and more proficient in their day to day administration of our environment, The College will benefit by improved customer service, SSO, and increase or more stable environment through the introduction of new services and technologies.

Interface integration and compatibility issues:

This migration will require transparency for all users who are migrated (Computer profile migration, Home Directory (Z:) drive mapping, departmental shared space mapping)  There needs to be clear procedure which will involve assessment of department’s existing computer objects, storage space, OASIS services being used (central networking, VPN, wireless).  Ability to access ASNTDOMAIN1 resources (ie. Print services, Citrix).
