Systems Group
The systems group builds, maintains, and advances the infrastructure for the services OASIS provides to the College. They operate in a very heterogeneous operating system environment, which consists of Windows, Linux and Apple OS X servers. They conduct work on the back end to secure access control and ensure that services are delivered seamlessly to all users in the College. The group stays on the edge of new technologies, and explores new ways to better support teaching, research, and administrative activities.
Unix expertise includes, but is not limited to, *contract-based*
user support and administration of IRIX, Solaris, and Red Hat
Enterprise Linux systems throughout the College and other campus
units. A pre-built, down-loadable UNC-specific Red Hat Enterprise
Linux installation image is provided to interested members of the
campus community free of charge. Additional

Windows expertise includes, but is not limited to, centralized
maintenance and support for the College's Active Directory domain,
departmental/research/home directory file storage and backup,
application access through Citrix, web site hosting, application
distribution, security/patch distribution, Symantec Antivirus updates,
and contract support/maintenance for various computer labs within the
College.
The Windows and Unix Systems Architects work closely together to
provide centralized access to and use of centralized file systems for
data storage, print services, application services, and infrastructure
support for supported members of the College and other units. The
Systems Group is in continuous collaboration with other divisions in
OASIS and many other IT groups across the greater campus community on a
wide range of projects. New and emerging technologies that can
contribute to the teaching and research mission of the UNC-Chapel Hill
campus are under evaluation on a continuous rotation.
