Services Available to Graduate Students

The following services are made available to graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Note that some services are restricted to departments specifically supported by OASIS.  If you have a question about any of these services please contact OASIS.

Page "Sandbox" Training Space
The "Sandbox" is a training room located in Howell 05 dedicated to raising the collective technical skill level of the faculty and staff across the college through group and individual training and workshops. It is outfitted with 12 computers with both Windows and Mac operating systems on them, as well as a fantastic whiteboard and projector.
Page Annual Report
The Annual Report System is a web application used by faculty, chairs, and recipients of private funding in the College of Arts and Sciences to report on their activities during the previous academic year.
Page Citrix
OASIS provides web accessible applications. This service allows users in the College to run certain software titles without the need to install them locally.
Page Desktop Support
OASIS provides deskside support for faculty, staff, and graduate students affiliated with various departments within the College of Arts and Sciences. Being covered under an OASIS service contract provides these departments with the following services.
Page iTunesU
Thanks to the initiative and help of Doug Edmunds and Brian Payst, OASIS has become fully vested in the iTunesU initiative at UNC.
Page Multimedia Production
Oasis is equipped to support multimedia as well as other 'new and emerging media' production across the college of Arts & Sciences.
Page On Call Service
OASIS provides on-call services to ensure that off-hours support will continue for the services we provide. Currently, the supported areas are defined by the management team. On call duties are delegated on a rotating basis to OASIS staff members, who function as the primary contact in order to respond, analyze, and follow through with resolution of the support issue.
Page Online Tutor
The Online Tutor allows students to submit drafts and receive feedback from UNC Chapel Hill Writing Center tutors. Students can and do use the Online Tutor to submit drafts at any time of the day or night. In addition to course-related assignments, cover letters, admissions essays, and other types of writing may be submitted for feedback. The code for the Online Tutor is used in a separate deployed instance by NC State. It has also been modified for use by the University of Iowa Writing Center.
Page Patch Management
Patch management is the process of controlling the deployment of both application and operating system patches and updates throughout the organization. It is necessary to maintain a stable, efficient, secure, and up to date infrastructure in order to overcome security vulnerabilities and intrusion attacks. Patch management is also necessary to overcome these security concerns in order to protect the organization’s intellectual property and production environment.
Page Software Development
OASIS provides full life cycle software development services to the College. Generally applications developed internally are prioritized by their impact to the College in terms of the departments, faculty, administrators and students who would benefit from an application.
Page VPN Service
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides an encrypted connection (secure tunnel) from outside networks or Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to the UNC-Chapel Hill internal network. UNC has installed a Cisco VPN concentrator that allows authorized users to access network resources from off campus using an ISP dial-in, DSL or cable modem service with Onyen authentication. You can work securely, just as if you were physically on campus.
