AcademiX 2009 - Evolving Teaching & Learning
Recently Jeff VanDrimmelen and Zachary Fisher were able to attend AcademiX 2009, a "conference focused on spurring change in teaching and scholarship through emergent digital learning environments" put on by Apple and hosted by Duke. It was a great day full of thought provoking technology and teaching theory. This article has some highlights of the day.
iPhone Development and Mobile Learning
There was an iPhone development workshop all day on Wednesday. As you may, or may not know, OASIS is the host of an iPhone developer's group here on campus that meets weekly to discuss iPhone development. You can find more information here.

Beyond Textbooks
- It was REALLY about cost - $500 a/kid - How can we recapture that cost.
- Different than the "read the chapter and answer the questions at the end."
It really is a great model that harnesses all of the AMAZING content out there! NO need for textbooks any more! The information we are teaching kids is online!! And FREE!!
Teachers have instructional blogs where they put their content! That is a fantastic idea!
Podcasting Panel
- Overview of creating and distributing podcasts, both as part of the class curriculum and just capturing the classroom environment and disseminating that.
