Other Software: Choosing the Right Tools for Research

Researchers often ask whether specific software is suitable for use with sensitive research data. Here’s how to determine if a tool meets UNC’s Minimum Security Standards (MSS) for Tier 2 or Tier 3 data:

  • Common Examples: For example, researchers may ask, “Can I use Dropbox to store my research data?” The quick answer is no—Dropbox has not been approved for use with Tier 2 or Tier 3 data due to its security limitations. It’s important to verify that any software you use aligns with approved security standards.
  • Check the Safe Computing Page: To find out if a particular software title is approved, visit the [Safe Computing]. You can search for the software to see if it meets security standards for sensitive research data.
  • Requesting Approval for New Software: If the software you’re interested in isn’t listed on the Safe Computing page, you can contact ITS Security by calling 919.962.HELP. Submit a ticket to request a review and approval of the software for research use.

By following these steps, you can ensure that the tools you use meet UNC’s security requirements and protect the integrity of your research data.
